Everyone born into this world is a gifted person in certain areas of human activity. They may not be  particularly academic or artistic. It does not mean that they are not gifted at all. If anyone thinks that he or she has been overlooked by God then he or she has to think again sharply. Often our gifts are there all the time. It could be hidden perhaps or lying dormant, but nevertheless they are there. Often it seems the case that the longer the search, the longer the wait, the bigger the gift is when you do finally discover it. The ability to persevere is in itself a gift and one that is very necessary in order to succeed in any worthwhile endeavour.

We have a gifted postman called Raju. Raju simply delivers the mail but he loves his job and you can sense it on seeing him. He whistles as he rides his bike and he is always smiling and waving or stopping for a friendly chat. He is like a ray of sunshine and brings a lot of happiness into people’s lives.

Martin Luther King put it best when he said “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of Heaven and Earth will pause to say “here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well”.

If we utilise our gifts and skills as good as we can and whenever we can we can be sure that we can live a meaningful and wholesome life. In this context it is worth recollecting the verses of Douglas Malloch, the poet, which reinforces this message.

“If you can’t be a pine on the top of the hill,

Be a scrub in the valley, but be

The best little scrub by the side of the rill.

Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.

If you can’t be a bush, be a bit of grass

And some highway happier make

If you can’t be a muskie, then be a bass,

But be the liveliest bass in the lake,

We can’t all be captains, we have got to be the crew

There is something for all of us here

There is big work to do and there is lesser to do

And the task we must do is near

If you can’t be a highway, then just be a trail

If you can’t be the sun, be a star,

It isn’t by size that you can win or fail,

Just be the best of whatever you are!
